What camping cooking gear do you recommend? What equipment do I need to cook your recipes? Yep, I get these two questions regularly. And my answer – great camping food starts with having the right equipment in your camp kitchen. Equipment that matches your style of camping whether that be a quick overnight hike, a weekend away or for weeks on end.
In this article, I share all the essential camp cooking gear I take camping. For both car camping and regular tent camping. Because when you have the right camp cooking equipment you can cook great meals.

My Must-Have Camp Cooking Essentials
Jet Boil
This was one of my first ever camping stoves. It is great when you stop to make a cup of coffee, tea or heat soup. Only simple meals can be made in this such as pasta and rice dishes. Great for when I’m travelling, camping or backpacking solo.
2 Burner Gas Stove
I like to travel with a 2 burner gas stove when I travel with my partner and / or children. When you are cooking for more than one person having 2 burners lets you cook two things at the same time. So you could have some meat cooking while boiling vegetables on the other burner. I got one with a wind break – believe me, a wind break is so helpful because the wind can blow out your flame.
Camping Kitchen with Cupboard
I have a similar camping kitchen with cupboard setup. Having one of these is great as you can keep all your utensils and some canned food in the cupboard and then you can have your stove on top. Having a flat surface for the stove is good so it doesn’t fall over on uneven surfaces that you encounter in the outdoors.
Camp Oven / Dutch Oven
I bought a camp oven, or some call it a dutch oven, so I could cook over the fire. So far, I’ve made a few stews and soups. I’ve also kept the lid off and cooked on my camping stove.
Frypan (preferably with a lid)
I cook so much in my frypan. Easy fried breakfasts of bacon and eggs to one-pot dishes. I use both on my camping stove and over an open fire.
Camping Cooking Equipment
To cook meals you will need equipment, like:
- Silverware (forks, knives, spoons)
- Tongs (metal and/or silicone)
- Spatula (metal and/or silicone)
- Serving spoon
- Ladle
- Wooden Spoons
- Can Opener
- Bottle Opener / Corkscrew
- Flat Metal Skewers
- Box Grater
- Cutting Board
Camping Fridge Freezer
I am not sure what brand of camping fridge freezer I have because I bought it second hand off an online market place. But it works a treat keeping food cold and some frozen. It does need power which I provide via my portable solar powered power bank.
