Camp Oven Fast and Fabulous Recipes
To cook in a camp oven you need to master the basics first. Once you know and understand the basics you can adapt any recipe to suit an outdoor camp oven. The two things you must know and understand to use a camp oven successfully are heat placement and heat control. You can then adapt any meal to be cooked in a camp oven if you know and understand these basics. Here are some tips for successful camp oven cooking.
- If you cook a meal in an oven at home, you are given the choice to heat both the top and bottom or the meal or the bottom only. To cook the same meal in a camp oven you will need to heat both the top and bottom of the camp oven. This is done by having hot coals on the lid and underneath the oven.
- If you cook a meal on a stove top at home, then only the bottom of the meal is heated. You will do the same for the meal in the camp oven, only heat the bottom.
- Controlling the heat of a camp oven is something you will need to master. Starting too hot will see burnt results. Avoid placing your camp oven directly on an open fire. Best results are when you cook over coals because they provide a steady heat. And hot coals can be put on top – see first point.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand ready to extinguish your fire after you have finished cooking.
- Use a seasoned camp oven. A well seasoned camp oven will have a hard exterior and provide you with many years of use.
